How to Hide Your IP Address

Hiding your IP address has become increasingly common. The reasons you may want anonymity can vary: you might need to access data from a website that restricts visitors by location, or you may have been banned after a heated forum discussion. Rather than focus on the reasons, this guide compares the available options, along with their advantages and drawbacks.

WEB PROXIES

A web proxy is a website with a browser-based interface that lets you visit online resources anonymously. Ease of use is its main advantage: enter the URL of the website you want to open in the appropriate field and click “Open.” This method is convenient for occasional browsing, but it is not well suited to extended web use.

In practical terms, web proxies are proxy servers accessed through a web interface. Below, we look more closely at how conventional proxies work.

HTTP(S) PROXY SERVERS

HTTP(S) proxies act as intermediaries, forwarding your data while replacing your IP address with their own. This is often enough for websites that do not apply strict visitor verification. However, the method has both advantages and disadvantages, whether you use a paid or free proxy.

Advantages:
✔ You can find free options with acceptable speeds.
✔ They can provide a reasonably high level of privacy, except against highly capable surveillance.
✔ They are easy to configure.
✔ You can switch among free proxies to find a suitable server.
✔ You can create proxy chains for greater anonymity.

Disadvantages:
✘ Data may be transmitted without encryption.
✘ Free proxies can be unsafe and may misuse your information.
✘ Free servers are often slow, and paid services can also become unstable.
✘ Free servers frequently stop working or move to a paid model.
✘ Using a proxy requires changes to your system settings.

Settings for different operating systems:

Windows
Start → Control Panel → Internet Options → Connections tab → LAN Settings.
Enable “Use a proxy server,” enter the IP address and port, and click “OK.”

Linux
Applications → System Tools → System Settings → Network → Network Proxy.
Select manual configuration, enter the IP address and port, and click “Apply.”

SOCKS PROXIES

SOCKS proxies, most commonly SOCKS5, work on a similar principle but can offer a higher level of anonymity. They hide your IP address and make traffic analysis more difficult. SOCKS supports multiple traffic types, including video streaming, gaming, and torrents.

To use a SOCKS proxy, you will need to configure it manually or use dedicated software such as SocksCap.

THE TOR NETWORK

Tor is a network of anonymous nodes that routes data through several intermediate servers using layered encryption. It is one of the more sophisticated ways to improve anonymity, although it still has weaknesses, particularly at exit nodes.

TYPES OF PROXIES

? Private proxies offer a high level of anonymity because each proxy is assigned to one user.
? Elite proxies hide both your IP address and the fact that you are using a proxy.
? Dedicated proxies provide stable IP addresses that are not shared with other customers.
? Unlimited proxies let you transfer data without bandwidth limits.
? Bulk proxies provide a set of IP addresses suitable for high-volume tasks such as web scraping or marketing analysis.
? Datacenter proxies are fast, stable IP addresses that are not tied to real user devices.

No method can guarantee complete anonymity online. Any security measure can be compromised, but proxy servers and Tor can make identifying a user significantly more difficult.
